What is participatory design?

The people who use a tool daily have knowledge no external designer can fully replicate.

Participatory design (PD) is a methodology in which the people who will use a product are actively involved in its design process โ€” not as research subjects or end-of-process testers, but as co-designers with genuine influence over the outcome.

The approach originated in Scandinavian workplace democracy movements of the 1970s. The core insight: domain knowledge lives with the users, not the designers. Ignoring it produces inferior products.

Participatory design is not user research. In user research, designers observe and extract insight. In participatory design, users co-produce the design itself.
